Hey all. Just wondered if anyone had any cleaning tips. Don't care for what room just anything will do. Especially stuff like hard wood flors. Thanks.
Hey, I like the Swiffer mop. It works wonders!
I'll give you the bachelor's solution: don't do it. If it needs to be done today, it'll even need it worse tomorrow.
Just kidding.
Bob
The swiffer mop is the best mop out there a blind person could ever use! What I tend to do is work in patterns and motions. Like for example when cleaning a counter I justdo a motion type thing so that I make sure I get every thing. Like I'll start on one section and do circular motions until that's clean etc. I do the same with the vacuum. Now one thing about a lot of vacuums is you can hear the dirt being sucked into the sweeper so if you don't hear any more dirt being sucked up then you know that section is probably clean. There's just endless ideas on how to clean so I'll let someone else chime in.

here's the best tip you'll ever get. You're a woman, that means cleaning is something you were born to. If your mom didn't teach you, go ask her why not, but do it before you find a man, because he'll expect you to clean just as well as he'll expect you to cook and fuck. hence the term W.I.F.E: "Washing Ironing Fucking Etcetera."
*laughs* If all guys were really like that, expecting, their women to know how to (and do) the cooking and cleaning, I guess I'm never. getting married. Both my parents cook and clean, so he'd better know how to do so as well. *smile* Anyways, as for any cleaning tips, I don't have anything much different from anything mentioned here. I clean in sections instead of in circles though, unless it's something where the section is small and already well-defined (like our dining room table where you can feel where each section is attached to the other), but even then I think I sometimes still do that.
Get cheep carpet, let everything accumulate on it for a year, role up the carpet throw it out and then buy more.
Well Kev, can wash and fuck, so hope my husband likes me flat on my back. With occasional permission to be allowed to change the bed.
Swiffer wet and swiffer dry are ok, but be careful of the swiffer wet jet. The cleaning solution is very, very bad for pets, especially cats, small dogs, rodents and birds, although it is not great for large dogs, I E guide dogs either. It has also been my experiance that the wet jet doesn't do anything more or anything better than the swiffer wet, with the disposable, replaceable cloths. I have yet to try the swiffer duster, but it sounds interesting. I personally love the scrubbing bubbles products for cleaning the bathroom. You can do the toilet, shower, bath tub, tile floors and walls, sinks, vanities and even the mirrors in a pinch, with minimal streeking. The scrubbing bubbles automatic shower cleaner is great, but here's the caussion. You have to clean the shower with in an inch of it's life before you start using the automatic cleaner. It will only work if the shower is extremely clean to begin with. But, if you do a spectacular job on the shower and then press the button on the shower cleaner every time you've finished with a shower it will keep your shower nice and clean so that yu only need to get in there and scrubb with a sponge every two to four weeks. Don't forget to get hair out of the drain after showers though, as it can slip through most shower drain holes and cause some really nasty problems with the plumbing. Also, you should put some liquid plumber down your tub or shower drain every two to three months, evenif there's no clog. All of the soap, shower gel, body wash, shampoo, conditioner and body scrub rezadoo can really build up, along with dead skin cells, dirt and debree and short or fine hairs that have been shaved off and that slip through rather then collecting on the drain cover. Windex is great for mirrors and windows, but just use a high quality paper towel, newsprint isn't any better and depending on the glass and the quality of the cleaner it can make streeking worse. It's true though that white bread can help clean wall papered or painted dry wall, especially mat finish or flat finish paint jobs. That's about all white bread is good for though, certainly not eating. Yuck. After you clean the outside of the toilet very well, including the lid, seat, rim, tank and base you can put on a toilet tank set to help minimalize dust build up. There's usually a fuzzy cover for the top of the tank, another for around the tank it's self and another cover that fits over the toilet lid. They are easy to clean. Just throw them in the wash and they make the bathroom look nicer. Oh, and those disposable toilet wands are crap. You really need a proper toilet brush to really get in there and scrub like hell. You should sanatize your toilet brush, toilet brush holder, bathroom waste paper basket and plunger as well. Something like soaking them in a mild bleech and water solution will do the trick. Throw away sponges after a month or so, and you can also sanatize sponges by putting them in the microwave for about thirty seconds. The micro waves kill all of the germs and bacteria.
Wow! Are you related to Martha Stewart?
Becky, I wonder if she's for hire?
When I was really hard up for money in high school I cleaned houses for a while. Also, I do a lot of baby sitting and pet sitting. If you're going to do that you need to know how to clean reasonably well.
only thought I can contribute is that I've used the swiffer wet jet, and me and my guide dog enjoy very much so. I've never heard of it being unsafe for pets, please tell me more?
It's not unsafe for pets. Check it out on www.snopes.com. It's a rumor that's circulated for a while, but there is actually no proof that it is harmful to pets.
Give me a break!
I'd rather be safe than sorry though when it comes to buying some of those commercial cleaners. I never let my cats be in the same room that I'm cleaning and wait until everything is completely dry before they can go in there. I also tend to wipe down my floors with water after using the cleaning solutions. I have a Dyson vacuum, and it works wonders. I use it to vacuum my floors, even the linoleum and tile before I wash them. I hate to sweep, so this works for me. I use OxyClean Products, and the Kaboom Never Scrub thing for the toilet works relatively well. Paper towels of a good quality work well for cleaning glass, and I usually use Windex, but sometimes I just use vinegar and water mixed together. I don't know how streaked my glass is though because no one usually comments on it. The thing I hate cleaning the most is the bathroom, especially when you have those glass shower doors.
for the glass shower doors, I recommend buying a clear shower curtain, and hanging it over the door.
When it starts getting dirty, throw it out. If you can't find a curtain that fits, pull out the old scissors.
Hi all, being relatively new to this thread, I thought I’d offer my alternatives. When I clean, I take my shoes off. It helps me to determine how clean the floors actually are. I do that when I sweep or map. Also, if I’m desperate enough, I’ll use a damp paper towel to clean with if I can’t get to a broom. It moves most stuff. Works for me most times, and now it does since I don’t own a broom. LOL!
I've recently tried to learn the basic cleaning skills but have found it difficult to sweep or wash the floor independently. The thing is that I can never make sure that I reach every corner of the room with the broom, since I always get confused when I have to change direction after I finish sweeping at a certain corner. Therefore I can never tell if the dirt is certained in one place and whether I collect all of it into the dustpan. I'm always afraid that I don't succeed in cleaning the whole surface of the room, and I still don't feel confident enough to do my cleaning chores without the guidance of a sighted person. If anyone has helpful tips and strategies that I can use, I would appreciate it if you could list and explain them here. Thanks, Shira
i know this might sound a bit difficult for some, but get an idea of waht your room is like space wise and go methodically over it in sections. that's the only way I can suggest for cleaning floors, walls, surfaces and shower doors. also, use good cleaning products. cheap ones just don't work in my experience.
I get down on my hands and knees and wash floors with Mr. Clean and a cloth every 2 weeks or so. Between time if there is some type of mess, I vacuum the tile floor with the vacuum. I never did good with a broom at all. I just moved the dust from one room to another at least that's what it felt like. I use paper towels and windex on glass and tub and tile cleaner on the shower doors and bathtub shower combination itself. Once every 3 months or so I get a cleaning lady in here to find any spots I missed. she cleans the stove and oven for me which I never have done; it's an electric stove and I am not comfortable picking up burners and taking out the plates from under the burners then putting them back again correctly.
ok she wants cleaning tips don't b imature about it its important regardless of your sight. well my advice is b consisstant wiv anything u do regarding cleaning then at least u know that u have covered everything and make sure u ask some one who is sighted that u trust if the job is done properly u have the right to b clean good on u.
for cleaning floors, picture them like a piece of graph paper. Then just clean each section. For sweeping a large floor, just work in sections. start in one end and work your way to the other. Most vacuum cleaners have a floor setting so you can easily clean any leftover dirt. Just use the same technique for mopping. It's really not that hard. The same technique works well on walls and glass as well. As far as products I love Klorox clean up spray. you can use it on practically any surface. I don't have a guide dog though so maybe other posters can comment on whether or not it's safe for pets. I don't care what anyone else says, I still use a cloth and some pledge to dust. In my oppinion, it just works better than no polish. Plus it makes my house smell fresh and clean. Run a broom along the top of your walls and doorways to get any cobwebs.
for cleaning the oven use a wet cloth and washing up liquid regularly at least twice a week so that u don't have to bother wiv the oven cleaner.
For the bathroom grout you can use a unsinted oven cleaner and just spray off workks great but don't do that every time you clean. I sweep the kitchen floor by sweeping everything from one side to the other then over to one corner as I go I pretend I can see lines that I am fallowing. I vacume first sometimes that helps then I get all the corners and edges. I think that 4 0 9 is the best for cleaning or greese lightening you can get that at walmart. spraying with dusting works for me because you get the fine dust off and you can't feel iTake your time so you can do a good job.t
As far as geting dirt out of the corners, remember that the vacume cleaner hose is your friend. I never sweep. I just vacume the floors, getting all the dirt that the powerhead can get, then use the hose on the baseboard and in corners. As for mopping, I use a bath towel, and drag it around with my feet. It does work, believe it or not. If the room is very small, such as my bathroom, I get down on my hands and knees and clean the floor that way. I pull the furnature out from the wall about twice a year or so and clean behind it.
After you wipe your countres down with whatever cleaners you want to use, make sure you dry it with a paper towel or something, otherwise, it can still feel dirty after it air dries. This is just in my experience and what works for me. Remember that there's no right way. You just have to find what works best for you personally, and yes, that whole swiffer wetjet rumor was a big hoax. www.truthorfiction.com is another great place to find the validity of rumors such as these.
wow. i am stonded, its friday night, and i too recently was *forced* to clean. I usualy clean once or twice a month. Hay, what can i say! hehe. The comments posted by most of you are kick ass. Thank you for posting. I will try to get a vacum, cloth rags, and fabreez...fabreez can be ur friend. lol thanks, gizmo
if you have alergies to some chemical cleaning products, then vinegar, lemon juce, metholated spirets, water and your favourite esentual oil make a great multipurpus cleaning product. I will post some recipes for mixing up your own cleaning products when Ig et home and can find my recipes.
Ooh, I can't wait for these recipes. I like stuff like that.
OK I lvoe to clean liek crazy. first off the bathroom, por cleach in the bakc of your towlet flush and pro agian. I do this about once every two weeks or once every week. I use a broom because I don't own a vacume. i use it on the carpet as well, kinda hard to do but i do what i need to do. I use a spung to clean my tile floors because my space is berry small adn I see no point in buying a mop when i can do it with a spung and be done in just a few. I take the things off the stove, electric. then use 4 o 9 to clean the top. I use a wet rag to clean in the insde of the top food and stuff can ge in side there as well. i do same for oven. I use a bleach and water mix for floors, bathtub, sinks. i use wet rag to clean counters and then go back over with 4 o 9. I do a grid for counter and floors. I have had a lot of practise. Ask for pointers from many different people and you should get soem begianing help. Like this post.
I use a lot of natural cleaning products. Vinegar and baking soda are awesome for cleaning just about anything. Tip: pour about one half cup of baking soda over the drain and follow that with a cup of vinegar...do this once a way to keep your drain clean. This solution also works well to unclog a drain. Vinegar also works well to clean all that soap scum from your shower. Replace chemicals with natural cleaners...better for your health, and if your children get into the baking soda or vinegar, you can be sure they'll never put it in their mouths again! and yes, I do suggest that you use a non-disposable toilet brush. Be sure to clean the outside of the toilet, including the tank, as thoroughly as the bowl. A long-handled brush works well for cleaning your shower...less bending and stretching than would be required if you were using a sponge to clean.
Hello? Is anyone posting here anymore? Lol! What about anoying mildu?
Oh yeah and, I'm also still waiting for those natural cleaner recipes.
lol I'd like those too... but I can't help with your mildue question.
mildew remover, it's harsh stuff, but works like a dream, detol do one, as do flash.
